A Story of Passion and Pride, Faith & Belonging
The legendary Mission Play charts the beginnings of California’s modern history as Father Junipero Serra and his followers struggle to build 21 missions throughout the Golden State.
Based on the 1927 classic which played to over 2.5 million people, this re-magined Mission Play is a story of passion and pride, full of dance and song, ultimately celebrating our shared experience, our colorful history and our vibrant community.
The Playhouse hosted the Mission Play Preview Dinner on October 25th, 2012. To see a photo album of the event, head on over to our Facebook page.
Film and television star Tony Plana was Creative Consultant to the Mission Play project. Early in the process, Tony dropped by the Playhouse to talk about the Mission Play. See the video here.
The Perfect Setting
The Mission Playhouse was originally built specifically for this production and many San Gabriel residents who were in the last Mission Play performances in the 1940’s joined us again2013 staging.
