Metropolis is a bustling 21st century city controlled by a powerful ruler. Underground Metropolis is the Workers’ City, where people work tirelessly exploited by those above. Celebrating its 90th Anniversary in 2017, Metropolis influenced pop culture and many sci-fi films thereafter. With tens of thousands of extras, vast sets, groundbreaking special effects, and over one million dollars spent (in 1927!), this film is a sci-fi visual masterpiece.
Accompanying the film on the Playhouse’s 1924 Mighty Wurlitzer theater pipe organ is American Theatre Organ Society’s Organist of the Year (1998) Clark Wilson. We will be showing the restored 2010 version of the film.
The series concludes with The Cameraman (1928) starring Buster Keaton on April 22nd.
