Toypurina – Oct 2014
An 18-month partnership project with Gabrieleno-Tongva San Gabriel Band of Mission Indians culminating in a sold-out run of the World Premiere of the stage play Toypurina charting the real-life events leading up to the rebellion against the San Gabriel Mission in 1785.
Free Pre-Concert Discussion – Jan 2015
A partnership project with the CalStateLA Symphony Orchestra/Olympia Youth Orchestra. Before the FREE community performance, concert goers joined Composer Mitsumoto, Conductor Ho, and soloist Biryukov for a pre-concert discussion moderated by Classical KUSC Radio Host Alan Chapman (pictured on right end).
LA County Arts – Arts Tune-Up – Jan 2015
In this partnership with LA County Arts Commission, over 140 artists and arts administrators attended a free workshop designed around an informal round-robin process in which participants visited five expert discussions and topic presentations. Topics included arts education in-school resources and working in arts education, community and cultural outreach, fundraising, individual artist resources, intro to public art, marketing, publicity, social media, understanding health insurance and healthcare reform. Free Summer Social Media Workshops – June & July 2015
In partnership with local website and marketing company Ready Artwork, we hosted 3 community workshops. Ready Artwork presented on a variety of topics including how to run a successful e-mail marketing campaign, A/B Testing, B2B Strategy vs. B2C Strategy, Yelp and Facebook ads and how they can boost your leads/sales.
A partnership project with the Native Sons of the Golden West- Ramona Parlor, Ramona Museum of California History, the Los Angeles Theatre Organ Society, and Rancho Camulos Museum & National Historic Landmark. The Mission Playhouse held a free silent film screening of the 1928 classic Ramona, directed by Edwin Carewe starring Dolores del Rio followed by a post-show discussion with Ramona historians.

Free Summer in San Gabriel Series– June 2015 to present
Beginning in June 2015, the Mission Playhouse has teamed up with San Gabriel’s Community Services and Community Development Departments to present free concerts and movies throughout the summer. Each Thursday night from mid June – early August, free movies and concerts are held at one of two locations: the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse or Vincent Lugo Park. From June – August 2019, the Playhouse is presenting 3 outdoor concerts as part of the Summer in San Gabriel series.

Silent Sundays Series – Nov 2015 to present
A series of classic silent film screenings with live accompaniment on our 1924 Wurlitzer pipe organ done in partnership with the Los Angeles Theatre Organ Society. The series launched with The Mark of Zorro (1920) starring Douglas Fairbanks. Season 4 began with Our Hospitality starring Buster Keaton on September 9, 2018. Season 5 will be announced this August!

Free Events, Storytelling & Kathak Dance – Feb 2016
During San Gabriel’s Lunar Year Festival, the Playhouse held 2 events where patrons got to join artists onstage for storytelling and Kathak dance.
Henan Art Troupe – Feb 2016
In partnership with Sias International University, Grand Performances and Community Arts Resources, the Playhouse presented the only West Coast performance of Henan Art Troupe on its first American tour featuring Chinese Folk Music, Opera, and Acrobatics.
Free Neighborhood Concert – Feb 2016
The Los Angeles Philharmonic partnered with the Playhouse to present a free neighborhood concert. The performance featured a new work by LA Phil Senior Composer Fellow and San Gabriel’s own Sharon Hurvitz, along with Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No.4. Leading the Philharmonic was Assistant Conductor Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla.

Steve Wilson Comedy Special – Apr 2016
Wilson, co-host of The D.L. Hughley Show and a semi-finalist on NBC’s Last Comic Standing, was joined by guest comics Johnny Osburn, Ricki Sofer, & John Moody for a comedy night at the Playhouse.
Free Poetry at the Playhouse – Apr 2016
Patrons listened to some of LA’s finest poets: Vickie Vértiz, Mike Sonksen, Naomi Hirahara at our free poetry event in honor of National Poetry Month.
Jornada – Apr 2016
In partnership with Arte Flamenco Dance Theatre, Jornada traces the origins, development and influence of Flamenco in an explosive celebration combining Indian Kathak, Irish Step Dance, Ballet Folklorico, and Flamenco, all accompanied by music played live on stage.
Curry Concert & Dinner – June 2016
Our first collaboration with the renowned Indian Classical music presenter, The Music Circle, for a Curry Concert & Dinner, featuring carnatic vocalist R.Suryaprakash.
Free Concert, The Ghetto Fivetet – June 2016
In partnership with About…Productions, we held a free concert in our beautiful lobby with The Ghetto Fivetet which featured members of the Grammy winning band Quetzal. The Ghetto Fivetet performed songs from the Quetzal songbook, and “They Shoot Mexicans, Don’t They?” which is scheduled to be presented at the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse in May of 2017 as part of a special event series, The Latin Wave.
Free Concert, Yari Moré Latin Band– Sep 2016
A free outdoor concert featuring Yari Moré Latin Band on Mexican Independence Day, guests enjoyed the sounds of salsa, cumbia, merengue, cha-cha, and the romantic bolero. The concert was sponsored by the office of Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich.
Partha Bose & Indranil Mallick– Oct 2016
Our second collaboration with The Music Circle, guests took a musical journey to India with enthralling classical music from internationally renowned artists Partha Bose (sitar) and Indranil Mallick (tabla).
In partnership with the Los Angeles Historic Theatre Foundation, LAHTF’s ‘All About’ theater tour series came to San Gabriel for a day of Playhouse history and a special behind the scenes tour.
Lunar New Year– Jan 2017
Thousands poured into the Mission District for the City’s Annual Lunar New Year Festival, this year celebrating the Year of the Rooster with performances in the Playhouse by Story-teller Barbara Wong and World Music ensemble Suzanne Teng and Mystic Journey.
Free Event, Play in A Day– Jan 2017
Local young people got together on stage at the Playhouse for an all day workshop led by LA based Rogue Artists Ensemble and presented a short performance. Presented in partnership with LA County Library, San Gabriel.
Free Event, Wine, Dine, & Dance– Feb 2017
Held before Valentine’s Day, guests enjoyed an authentic tango lesson and performance, along with complimentary finger foods and wine tasting.
A partnership with the Mariachi Women’s Foundation, this concert featured Mexico’s female Jarocho ensemble Caña Dulce y Caña Brava, Las Alteñas, the finest all-female mariachi group in San Antonio, Texas and the two-time Grammy-winning Mariachi Divas de Cindy Shea.
Free Event, San Gabriel Festival– Mar 2017
Presented in partnership with The Da Camera Society, patrons caught free informal performances from the San Gabriel Mission Marimba ensemble in the Playhouse lobby while touring the Mission District.
Rajeev Taranath & Udayraj Karpur– Apr 2017
Rajeev Taranath on sarod accompanied by Udayraj Karpur on tabla performed in our next Global Flavors series concert in collaboration with The Music Circle. Lemon Grass Chai and Maharaja Burritos were served after the performance.
Jornada & Mercado– Apr 2017
A grand celebration of world music and dance, Jornada traced the development and influence of Flamenco from Spain to Rajasthan, North Africa, and Yucatan. Outside at Playhouse Plaza, the festive Mercado ‘market’ featured beautiful handicrafts from local artisans, food vendors, and free cultural performances on the outdoor stage with Ballet Folklorico Sol de Fuego and Las Colibrí.
The Latin Wave– May 2017
A series that took a look at the treatment of Latino culture from Hollywood’s beginnings to the present. The series included a silent film screening, documentary screening, an interactive play, and 2 free events, an exhibition and symposium. The Latin Wave was co-produced with About…Productions. Free Mexican Independence Day Concert – Sep 2017
We celebrated Mexican Independence Day with a free outdoor concert at Playhouse Plaza featuring son jarocho ensemble Conjunto Jardín and Latin Grammy nominated Trio Ellas. The concert was sponsored by the office of Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger.
Free Event, Arts Tune-Up Workshop – Sept 2017
In this partnership with the LA County Arts Commission, artists and arts administrators attended a free workshop where they participated in three 40-minute roundtable sessions on a variety of topics including arts advocacy, time management, and fundraising.
Presented in partnership with the San Gabriel Valley Music Theatre, leaders in the L.A. theater community explored the topics of diversity and equality in the arts with Finding Your Voice as an Artist in a Multicultural Society.
Josh Feinberg & Nilan Chaudhuri – Nov 2017
Josh Feinberg on sitar accompanied by Nilan Chaudhuri on tabla performed in our next Global Flavors series concert in collaboration with The Music Circle. An Indian vegetarian meal was served after the performance.
Free Event, Telling Our Stories -Nov 2017
In partnership with Alhambra Source and Asian Americans Advancing Justice LA, a free youth journalism workshop, Telling Our Stories, was held for 9th-12th grade high school students.
Free Event, Play in A Day– Jan 2018
Local students got together on stage at the Playhouse for an all day workshop led by actor Whitney Rydbeck (M*A*S*H, Rocky II, Scrubs, 7th Heaven and Star Trek: The Next Generation). At the end of the workshop, students presented a performance to their friends and family. This event was presented in partnership with LA County Library, San Gabriel.
Ray Fuller & Friends – Feb 2018
In honor of Black History Month, guests enjoyed a night of jazz, soul, and gospel with guitarist A. Ray Fuller and his friends who have worked with artists including Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Jennifer Lopez, Aretha Franklin, Branford Marsalis, George Duke, and BeBe & CeCe Winans.
Free Event, Alan Chan Jazz Orchestra – Feb 2018
During the Lunar New Year Festival, patrons came inside the Playhouse for a free performance from the Alan Chan Jazz Orchestra. Founded in 2011, the 17 piece orchestra “…is a well oiled machine and one that moves and acts like no other…” (allaboutjazz.com).

Ravi Shankar’s senior disciples Gaurav Mazumdar (sitar), Barry Phillips (cello), Ashwini Shankar (shehnai), and Arup Chattopadhyay (tabla) took guests on a journey into the realm of Shankar’s music. This concert was presented in partnership with The Music Circle.
Broadway Divas – Mar 2018
Jennifer Leigh Warren (Little Shop of Horrors, Big River), Kim Huber (Marie Christine, Sunset Boulevard, Beauty and the Beast), Sandra Allen (Sunset Boulevard, revival of Flower Drum Song) and Jennifer Paz (Les Misérables) shared their sensational journeys and serenaded patrons with the music that made them stars.

Free Event, Asian Pacific American Festival – May 2018
A celebration of Asian Pacific American culture, the Asian Pacific American Festival consisted of over 20 FREE events: workshops (Tai-chi, Martial Arts, Floral Arts, Cantonese Opera, Writing, Scholar for a Day), film screenings, performances, a symposium, and a Family Day at Playhouse Plaza on Mother’s Day.
Summer Musical Theatre Program for Students – July- Aug 2018
In partnership with San Gabriel Valley Music Theatre, the Playhouse hosted a 3 week workshop for students ages 8-18 that culminated in two free community performances of Willy Wonka Jr.
The Story of Ramona – Sept 2018
Inspired by Helen Hunt Jackson’s popular 1884 novel of the same name, patrons followed dancers as they moved throughout our theater and scenic grounds in this site specific work told through dance. This event was produced in partnership with Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre.
Free Mexican Independence Day Concert – Sept 2018
Our 3rd annual Mexican Independence Day concert featured Esperanza Flores Ballet Folkorico, singer/songwriter Nancy Sanchez and Latin Grammy nominated Trio Ellas. The concert was sponsored by the office of Los Angeles CountySupervisor Kathryn Barger.

In partnership with The Music Circle, the rich tapestry of India’s musical arts was highlighted in a concert that united the Hindustani musical tradition of the North and the Carnatic of the South.
The Mel Brooks Musical: Young Frankenstein – Oct 2018
Presented in partnership with San Gabriel Valley Music Theatre, Young Frankenstein starred Broadway/TV star Adam Wylie. Award-winning theater veterans Ray A. Rochelle and Rikki Lugo directed and choreographed a company of professional musical theatre actors in this exclusive, one weekend only production.
Free Event, Alan Chan Moo-sic Group – Feb 2019
During the Lunar New Year Festival, patrons came inside the Playhouse for a free performance from the Alan Chan Moo-sic Group who presented a concert with exciting original tunes and arrangements to celebrate the Year of the Pig.
This free festival celebrated Asian Pacific American culture through music, theatre, film, and symposium events.
