As part of our Asian Pacific American Festival, explore the ancient daily rituals of the Song Dynasty Scholar.
In this 45-60 minute workshop, participants will learn about the unique experience, Hands On Culture-Be A Scholar For A Day, an education program presented by Chinese Floral Arts Foundation-USA Charter supported by The Huntington Library Chinese Garden Verdant Mist Scholar Society. The program explores ancient daily rituals of the Song Dynasty Scholar – changing painting/calligraphy as a means of inviting new ideas to stimulate the mind, incense burning to stimulate the sense of smell, brewing of tea to stimulate the sense of taste, and flower arranging to cultivate the sense of union with nature while stimulating the sense of sight and touch.
These four rituals aided in the cultivation of a better sense of self through critical thinking, and these traditional arts cut across the grain of our hurried popular culture and at the same time, these methods and practices offer ancient Scholar approaches to harmonious living even in today’s chaotic world.
