The Mission Playhouse and The Los Angeles Theatre Organ Society present Speedy (1928) starring Harold Lloyd on Sunday, September 25th at 2:30pm. Romance, Comedy, Action, and an appearance from Babe Ruth make this movie set in 1920s New York a must see! Come early and view vintage autos from the San Gabriel Valley Model A Restorers Club and Santa Anita A’s Model A Club.
The Academy Award nominated Speedy is Lloyd’s last silent film and one of his best. Lloyd plays Harold ‘Speedy’ Swift, a lovable gentleman who loves baseball but can’t seem to keep a job. Pop, the grandfather of his sweetheart Jane, operates New York City’s last horse drawn streetcar. When a railroad company tries to sabotage Pop’s streetcar to take over his route, Speedy’s mission is to foil their plot. With scenes filmed throughout New York City, at Coney Island and other landmarks, Speedy is a “…love letter to New York that will have you grinning from ear to ear” (criterion.com).
Accompanying the film on our 1924 Mighty Wurlitzer pipe organ is American Theatre Organ Society’s Organist of the Year (2012) Mark Herman. One of America’s busiest young theatre organists, he performs in over 30 concerts and film screenings across the country and abroad yearly.
The series continues with Chase, Lloyd, and Keaton (three short films: Crazy Like A Fox-Charlie Chase, Bumping into Broadway-Harold Lloyd, The Scarecrow-Buster Keaton on November 20), and additional screenings on February 5 and May 7.
