Silent Sundays at the Playhouse continue with the 1925 classic film, The Phantom of the Opera, starring the legendary ‘Man of a Thousand Faces’ Lon Chaney, Sunday afternoon, October 28th at 2:30pm!
Based on Gaston Leroux’s novel, Chaney plays Erik, a disfigured composer that lives in an underground lair beneath the Paris Opera House who falls in love with a singer named Christine (Mary Philbin). A master artist in character makeup, his transformation into the Phantom of the Opera remains iconic.
With spectacular sets and dazzling costumes, The New York Times wrote “The Phantom of the Opera is an ultra fantastic melodrama, an ambitious production in which there is much to marvel at in the scenic effects…” “The Phantom of the Opera has inspired countless remakes and imitations but none of its successors can rival the mesmerizing blend of romance and mystery that haunts every frame of the Lon Chaney original” (kinolorber.com).
Accompanying the film on the Playhouse’s 1924 Mighty Wurlitzer theater pipe organ is American Theatre Organ Society’s Organist of the Year (2016) David Peckham.
Next up in our Silent Sundays series are Ella Cinders (1926) featuring the talented comedic actress Colleen Moore on January 27th, Alfred Hitchcock’s Blackmail (1929) on April 14th, and the two color technicolor swashbuckling adventure, The Black Pirate (1926) starring Douglas Fairbanks on June 2nd.
