SAN GABRIEL MISSION PLAYHOUSE
320 SOUTH MISSION DRIVE
SAN GABRIEL, CALIFORNIA 91776
Sarangi, saxophone, tabla and string bass combine to draw you into the beautiful world of coincidence and connection.
These remarkable musicians bring together their unique experiences as global citizens weaving together ancient traditions and modern intercultural departure in a musical tapestry of classical Indian music and jazz.
In 2014, Korean saxophonist Hyunpill Shin was sponsored by his government to create a musical collaboration, his passion for Indian music leading to his meeting and collaborating with 8th generation sarangi player, Suhail Yusuf Khan. The pair later met at the rehearsal studio of Suhail’s long-time friend Vishal Nagar, tabla player and son of the renowned Kathak danseuse and vocalist Vidushi Urmila Nagar. Almost immediately, the intense musical connection between the three became clear, and the trio played throughout the rest of the day. Over a week, right there in Hauz Khas, a village in South Delhi, the three recorded ten tracks, creating their first album, Milaap (“come together” in Hindi).
Through another series of coincidences and good fortune, the Mission Playhouse is delighted to present the first ever US concert by Hauz Khas Connection, bringing performers and audience together onstage in an intimate setting. Join us for this very special event, the first in our Global Flavors series.
